Doctor 'manhandles' Yavatmal GMC guard; stabbing accused denied bail

YAVATMAL: A professor at the Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College allegedly manhandled a security guard at the main gate on Friday afternoon. The reason behind the incident is unknown.Meanwhile, the accused who stabbed a junior resident on Thursday was sent to jail after his bail application was rejected by the court. He was arrested under section 326 of the IPC. It's learnt that the stabbing victim was discharged from the ICU.Resident doctors across the state supported the strike called by fellow doctors at Yavatmal GMCH. While there was no strike in any other medical college, doctors took out candle marches in most GMCs on Friday night.The state government also released a GR allowing over 1,400 new posts of senior residents in state GMCs on Friday evening. This was one of the prime demands of resident doctors, who welcomed the state government decision."We thank the state government for addressing our long pending demand for new posts. But the security issue still remains a major concern," said Dr Avinash Dahiphale, president of central MARD.At Yavatmal, in a joint meeting of the district administration, police and college management on Friday, it was decided to provide a prison ward and a police chowky at the hospital.
Despite the assurances, agitating residents are not ready to call off their strike. They said the strike would continue for four days and if their demands are not met within that period they would continue the strike. Though the residents are on strike, the emergency and casualty wards remained functional.Dean Milind Phulpatil was unreachable. Medical superintendent Dr Surendra Bhuyar said that he is on leave.In the latest incident, the professor who manhandled the security guard was identified as Dr Vijay Pote. He was not reachable for comments. Till the filing of this report, no police complaint had been lodged by the guard. However, City police have made note of the incident in the station diary. A team was even sent to the GMC to gather information, said additional SP Piyush Jagtap."The dean should set up a five-member committee and based on their recommendations, we should be given a road map to ensure safety and security of the staffers, including doctors and residents," he said.
